I need to select the material for a stack of a down-therm oil heater that burns Fuel-Oil that contains sulfur. The equipment is a 2.500.000 Kcal/h oil heater for a milk spray dryer It will stop every day for 4 hours during the cleaning of the milk evaporator Does is Cor-Ten a good option? What do you suggest? Thank you in advance Julio Moncecchi Montevideo - Uruguay

What is the sulphur percentage?Based on sulphur percentage the dew point temperature will vary. For 1-2% wt sulphur with stack outlet temperature in the range of 180+DEG.C,Carbon steel shell with refractory lining will do the job provided you chimney dia should be more to do lining. The sulphur dew point temperature is a major factor deciding the metallurgy of base metal. regards,

Thank you for your rapid answer. The Fuel-Oil we have in Uruguay hava a Max. of 3%in weigth So you suggest a refractory lining What do you think of using Cor-Ten without lining? (We already have a stack in this situation that has to be changed from natural gas to this fuel-oil) Regards, Julio Moncecchi

Dear Julio, With compliments to Krish, if you are having 3%wt of S in the stack fumes your corresponding dew point will be higher than 180C . COR-TEN Steel are weathering Steel i.e. weather resistant steel basically intended for exterior application. But it is not resistant to corrosion under moisture/ water stagnancy or pockets. In ur application moisture + SO3 can generate raw sulphuric acid with higher dew points and here corten steel is not at all advisable. U hv to use a designed refractory layer over CS stack. regards
