Dear Sir.s, if possible I would like your help. I have a C60 (AISI 1060 - 0,6%C; 0,9%Mn) shaft steel to repair. I would like make a surface overlay to repair the material wear (1,5 mm), according ASME IX (QW-453). The shaft diameter is %7E250 mm. Can anybody help me about: - welding filler material; - pre-heat; Note) Maybe I will put a Inconel material with high pre-heat because I would like avoid PWHT. Many Thanks in advance. Luis

Luis C 1060 is high carbon- manganese steel. Special precautions must be taken when welding steels in these classes. Low hydrogen electrodes must be employed and preheating of from 300-320oC is necessary, especially when heavier sections are welded. Choose an appropriate filler material if same carbon steel welding is done. A postheat treatment, either stress relieving or annealing, is usually specified. With 1.5 mm over lay welding, PWHT may not be necessary. Since you are proposing to have only 1.5 mm of Inconel over lay, probably you should do a good insulation wrap immediately after welding as any sudden cooling with shaft dia of 250 mm may develop high surface hardness. Take surface hardness after machining the over lay weld. If hardness of over lay weld is matching that of parent shaft then no S.R may be necessary. Hello, many thanks by your attention. Just one more information: The average hardness base material it%C2%B4s around 190 HV. Can you tell me about accceptable values in HAZ after weld? (in %). The maintenance company would like make a PWHT around 400%C2ºC after weld (1,5 mm inconel overlay). If I have care to avoid any sudden cooling, in your opinion PWHT it's necessary? Many Thanks. Luis Hardness of 190 BHN for parent shaft is ok. You can have variation of upto +10% in your hardness for the Inconel overlay weld after machining. If maintenance would like to do a wrapping and hold at 400 deg cent of the inconel over lay weld at the built-up area it is ok. They have to hold the shaft with 250 mm thickness at places to avoid warping and distortion stresses and also conducted heat dissipation in the shaft. hope this helps >Hello, many thanks by your attention.
