I want to ask about the NDT techniques which can confirm that proper PWHT (mean specified heating rate + holding time + cooling rate) has been performed on a weld joint or not. One obvious NDT is to check hardness of the weldment / HAZ / Base material, but sometimes the hardness of weldmetal even without PWHT comes in the specified / desired range and from hardness tester we can find the hardness of outer surface only and if the proper holding time is not maintained the hardness of the inner surface can be higher than the specified value. As per my understanding, PWHT is performed to bring the hardness, toughness, resilience under the desired limits and to provide resistance against stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen attack. So, please suggest me some NDT technique, thru which we can confirm that proper PWHT of a weldment is performed or not.

besides checking hardness from both side of cross section U can do pre and post weldheat treatment in-situ metallography at the same spot. >I want to ask about the NDT techniques which can confirm >that proper PWHT (mean specified heating rate + holding time >+ cooling rate) has been performed on a weld joint or not. > >One obvious NDT is to check hardness of the weldment / HAZ / >Base material, but sometimes the hardness of weldmetal even >without PWHT comes in the specified / desired range and from >hardness tester we can find the hardness of outer surface >only and if the proper holding time is not maintained the >hardness of the inner surface can be higher than the >specified value. > >As per my understanding, PWHT is performed to bring the >hardness, toughness, resilience under the desired limits and >to provide resistance against stress corrosion cracking and >hydrogen attack. > >So, please suggest me some NDT technique, thru which we can >confirm that proper PWHT of a weldment is performed or not.

May be you can check the weld using residual stress meter to confirm the presence of any residual stress after PWHT.
