Hello all, I have a shell-tube heat exchanger problem. I want to change copper-nickel tubel in to a stainless steel. But I am concerned about the heat transfer performance, because thermal conductivity of stainless steel is 3 times less than copper-nickel. I am no expert in thermal engineering, so I want to know, how big is the performance difference if I change all tube material from copper-nickel to stainless steel? Does someone has any experience in this matter? Thanks in advance & best regards, Ace

Pl.give your service condition on both shell & tube side. What was original tube material and which grade of SS you are planning to use?

Hi Krish, Environment is containing sulfur and sometimes there is also erosion corrosion, so it is not good using copper alloys. We are trying to use superduplex material.

Ace Duplex S.S would be OK from erosion-corrosion compared to SS or Cu Ni for the service given. Cu-Ni wd have good heat transfer compared to S.S and Duplex S.S but Cu Ni may not have erosion-corrosion resistance better than Duplex S.S Heat transfer for S.S and Duplex S.S would be nearly same. From corrosion-erosion, combined with heat transfer duplex S.S should give you satisfactory performance - over-all Hope this helps C.V.Srinivasan Nishi Engineers Pvt Ltd India Sept 18, 2010 E mail: nishi@vsnl.com >Hello all, > >I have a shell-tube heat exchanger problem. >I want to change copper-nickel tubel in to a stainless >steel. >But I am concerned about the heat transfer performance, >because thermal conductivity of stainless steel is 3 times >less than copper-nickel. >I am no expert in thermal engineering, so I want to know, >how big is the performance difference if I change all tube >material from copper-nickel to stainless steel? >Does someone has any experience in this matter? > >Thanks in advance & best regards, > >Ace

Hi Metacomp, Sorry first, but I think you misunderstood my question. We personally select duplex just to combat corrosion (both from erosion & sulfur) and we are pretty sure that it will perform well. The main question for us is how about the thermal performance? how big it will be affected if there is changes from copper nickel to duplex? Kind regards, Ace
