I%E2%80™d like assistance on the following issue. Is it required an internal lining for an underground concrete tank in spent/fresh monoethanolamine (MEA) service? MEA is used for H2S removal from refinery treat gas. This atmospheric tank will be used for drains collection. Lean MEA concentration will be 20%wt, operating temperature 50-60C though design is 225C to cover steam out, heating coil failure and other contingencies. If a lining is required is anyone aware of suitable material categories or even available products? A lining suitable in temperature range -7/225C would be desirable but even a lining with a shorter operating range will be taken into consideration. Thanks in advance for your help.

Vasdimit Concrete without lining can possibly be exposed or susceptible for re-bar corrosion or SCC thru H2S present in Lean MEA on both concrete or the re-bar steel used. Lining underground tank for use in spent MEA is possible with non-metallic lining or coating application materials / methods - e.g. Rubber, PVC, FRP or coating with phenolic epoxy based application. Maximum temp even taking Butyl rubber lining will be around 120-140 deg cent. FRP or PVC will stand lower than 80 deg cent for continuous duty. Coating the inner of your concrete tank is an alternate with phenolic epoxy based application would also have limitation around 90-110 deg cent on a continuous basis. PTFE application probably may stand temp close to 200-220 deg cent. I am not sure any applicator who does concrete tank lining with PTFE application. For temp of 225 deg cent given in your query, i doubt any conventional lining material (non-metallic or plastic type or even coating application to protect the concrete from re-bar or SCC effect due to H2S in lean MEA) would stand this temp if lean MEA at 225 deg cent is dumped when heater coil fails. You may have to check with any of the leading applicator of lining or coating in your country if any applicator has technology or method for use in temperature excess of 200 deg cent for protecting your concrete tank for used lean MEA attack at this temp and corrosive effects. Hope this helps C.V.Srinivasan Nishi Engineers Pvt Ltd India Jan 18, 2009 E-mail: nishi@vsnl.com >I%E2%80™d like assistance on the following issue. > >Is it required an internal lining for an underground >concrete tank in spent/fresh monoethanolamine (MEA) service? > >MEA is used for H2S removal from refinery treat gas.
