"Crevice corrosion of 316SS"
Question:
"We have a corrosion problem of a 316SS panel that is attached to a structure sitting in a beach. Severe pitting and crevice corrosion were observed, which is believed to be associated with this marine environment. I would like to know if there is a way to prevent the corrosion, particularly the crevice corrosion underneath washers."
Answer:
Several approaches can be considered to prevent crevice corrosion. One, upgrade to a more crevice corrosion resistant alloy, such as Alleghany Ludlum's AL6XN, or its similar chemistry competitors. Two, paint the panel. Three, through design modifications, eliminate the crevices.
