"Effect of Heat Treatment Atmosphere on Corrosion Resistance of SS317L"

Question:

"What will be the effect on corrosion resistance of SS317L if one lot of 0.1 mm thick sheets are austenitized in air and quenched in water and another lot is austenitized in hydrogen and quenched in water. The surface of both the sheets look bright."

Answer:

I do not anticipate any material difference between the two heat treatments with regard to corrosion resistance. However, I am unsure regarding any embrittlement or ductility issues based on locked in hydrogen.
