"Rust Spots/ 316SS tank bottom"
Question:
"We have two stainless steel tanks that have small water spot size rust stains/spots on the bottom surface of the tanks. What could cause this type of rust to form on the bottom surface of this tank. We basically cleaned the tanks with distilled water and a caustic based cleaning agent at approximately 70 deg c. There are several other tanks that do not have this same "water spot size rusting". The tanks are new and have only been used once and flushed with acetone prior to the cleaning described above. No acids are used inthe product. (solvents used in the process: Toluene, Hexane and Acetone)"
Answer:
The rust spots could be due to corrosion at areas of iron contamination, all other process parameters being equal. Deposits could also cause the corrosion you describe.
