"Material for handling chlorine Gas"

Question:

"It is well known the effects of the chlorine in Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel, however I have a little doubt about the specif material for storing and handling chlorine gas. I can used PVC material with successfully in water with chlorine gas for cooling water treatment, but I can not used PVC from Chlorine Gas Vessel to chlorine-water mix section. Can I used within SS 316 tubing/carbon steel pipe or cooper tubing in this application (chlorine gas)?"

Answer:

You should be able to use carbon steel for handling chlorine gas at ambient temperatures as long as it is absolutely dry (no water). Absorbed moisture from the atmosphere (or other sources) will result in excessive corrosion.
