"Material for Sulphuric acid"

Question:

"I would like to know which is most suitable material for the Plug of our contrl valve in 80% concentration of sulphuric acid at maximum temperature of 80 degC and pressure about 5 kg/cm2 G. We have tried Monel but it has corroded. We intend to try SS316; which will be better SS316 or DuplexSST or Carpenter20 Alloy?"

Answer:

Of the three materials you listed, Carpenter 20 Cb-3 should be the most resistant. However, if Monel 400 was corroding excessively, contaminents in the acid, or swings in concentration, may be influencing corrosion rates. Therefore, without additional process information, we would be hesitate to make a specific recommendation.
