"Nonmagnetic replacement for 4820"
Question:
"Our company has a special application requirement for a hardenable (45 - 50 Rc), tough, non-brittle, machinable material which also needs to be non-magnetic. Material 4820, gas carburized @ 1650 deg F to .033 case depth (50Rc); with sub-zero treat after quench at -120 deg F and double temper @ 300 deg F for two hours, provides the exact physical properties desired for our application - with exception of its magnetic property. Does the group have any suggestions for a specific S.S. (Austentic or Superalloy) or Titanium alloy that may be used?"
Answer:
You don't mention what component of a hammer drill you need a new material for. I can only make a general recommendation to investigate the austenitic manganese steels. They possess most of the properties you are interested in except for machinability. Representative compositions can be found in ASTM A128. Material property information can be found in the Metals Handbook, Vol. 3, Ninth Ed., ASM International.
