"Selection of SS for Hot Oil Processes"

Question:

"I was hoping that you could tell us if 316 /316L (Schedule 40 ) 150psi was the correct choice for a hot oil system reaching temps in the range of 650 F. Pressure on the system is low at 50 psi. Also if you have any documents that could help us refer to in the future about this system (hot oil) it would also be helpful."

Answer:

Type 316SS should be adequate for hot oil service at 650F, based on chemical compatibility. For design wall thicknesses to withstand pressure, you should consult the appropriate code reference (ANSI B31.3, etc.).
