"Sulfuric Acid Tank - Dip tube material"

Question:

"I am looking for suggestions and alternatives for the selection of a material to be used as the "dip tube" (internal inlet pipe) for a 98% sulfuric acid storage tank. I am aware of the NACE Recommended Practice that suggests use of an Alloy 20 pipe inside of a plain carbon steel tank. However, the client wishes to coat the tank internals with a baked phenolic coating and the dip tube cannot be coated internally. Any suggestions?"

Answer:

The short answer is I see no reason why an alloy 20 Cb-3 dip tube could not be used with a phenolic coated carbon steel tank for 98% sulfuric acid.
