I have a hot surface (up to 535 degrees C) on an oil heater for a refinery. It is being suggested that to help prevent corrosion between the body and the insulation (ceramic fibre of some sort) it should be painted with a Silicon/Aluminium based paint. The body material is to be a 316L stainless steel. My concern is that at the operating temperatures LME may start to occur within the steel. Unfortunately I have no information on the specific paint other than it will contain aluminium. Any information or suggestions that anybody has on this would be appreciated.

Sir: Your stated operating temperatures are slightly below the melting point of aluminum. Also, a quick look found no reference to embrittlement of austenitic stainless steels due to exposure to liquid aluminum. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
