"304 Stainless Steel Corrosion"

Question:

"8 months ago I installed a 304 grade stainless steel sink in my laundry, it developed rust marks and then slight raised spots and now has pin holes right through the sink, the underside of the sink is totally coated with crusty rust. The sink manufacturer says it is my fault for storing "chemicals" underneath the sink. There have never been any chemicals unusual to laundries stored under my sink and all the regular types were in new plastic bottles. I would appreciate any information on the subject of stainless steel resistence to household products."

Answer:

Austenitic stainless steels (304SS) are not particularly resistant to bleaches and chlorine-containing products.
