"Corrosion properties of 316L witk Methylene Chloride and HCl"

Question:

"We are hoping to use a 316L SS reactor to contain a mixture of approx. 88% methylene chloride and 3% Hydrochloric acid the rest is the active product. All of the reagents are at Ambient temperature. The HCl is used up in the reaction over a period of approx 1.5 hours. Then the mixture is neutralised and the methylene chloride is subsequently evaporated off. From your experience can this be carried out in a 316L SS reactor?"

Answer:

I would not use a 316SS vessel for your proposed service. The potential for pitting and chloride SCC is high.
