"Possible corrosion of Carbon Steel caused by Chlorine"
Question:
"Only one question for you. Is possible corrosion of Carbon Steel for low Tª (SA-334) working in these conditions: Tª -5 ºC Fluid : Octene and Chlorine with no water, 30% weight Chlorine in this fluid. We have a heat exchanger working in these conditions ( tubeside ) for eight years and we hadn´t had any corrosion problems, only a slight pitting inside the tubes, but no problems of leaks (until this moment). It may be in these conditions the metal surface has been passivated?"
Answer:
In the absence of water, carbon steel should be resistant to the octene/chlorine environment. I suspect that you have had water contamination of the process stream.
