"409 VS 410 as a magnet backing plate"

Question:

"I have a circular 8-pole magnet (1.8" O.D. 0.8" I.D. 0.32" thick) that is epoxied to a 410 stainless "washer" before being magnitized. The vendor for the washer is out of 410 and wants to use 409 instead. Can someone help me understand if there will be an undesirable impact by using the 409 material as the backing yoke for the magnet? The final application of the magnet is a magnetically coupled drive in a single use disposable blood pump."

Answer:

Type 410 stainless steel contains more carbon than does 409SS, thus making it hardenable (stronger) based on heat treatment. 409SS cannot be effectively hardened through heat treatment, as can 410SS. Other than that, they both possess similar chemical compositions (~12% chromium) and strength in the annealed condition. I would not care to guess on undefined "undesirable impacts" of a part used in the medical industry, based the information provided.
