WHAT IS THE DIRECT EFFECT OF CHLORIDE ON STAINLESS STEELS?

Renu: The answer to your question is quite complicated when specifics of chloride concentration, temperature, stress and design are concerned. However, the simple answer is that, depending on the exact environment, the result may be (1) nothing, (2) pitting, or (3) stress corrosion cracking. Hope this helps! Sorry the question is too short. My question is: What does chloride do with stainless steel microscopically?

Renu: The aqueous chloride ion will penetrate the chromium oxide film and cause pitting and/or SCC. Hope we answered your question. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

David: You have answered precisely. Thank you. Where can I find detailed information on the environment and influence of the environment on this process?
