I'm looking for some advice on material compatibility. I want to use a high pressure plunger pump to pump produced water at 35degC and 105 bar pressure. The water contains 14500ppm chloride. If I use 316L wetted parts in this pump, will I suffer short/long term corrosion problems ? Thanks

If the temperature is around 35 Deg.C there will not be a problem if we use 316.The added advantage of 316 is it has Mo which can resistant to chloride pitting with the above specified temperature. regards,

It seems to be Sea Water as it contains reasonably high chloride in the tune of 15000 ppm. Though SS 316L contains "Mo" and having some pitting corrosion resistance due to it's Mo content the success of pitting corrosion resistance depends on PREN No. At your given temperature use of SS 316L has given mixed result of success and failure but in general SS 316L may not be advisable considering long term corrosion resistance and failures. You may use some category of Duplex or Super-Duplex SS like Alloy 2507 UNS S32750 having much higher PREN with higher CPT. Also discuss with your designer. regards

Use a duplex stainless steel 2205 for this application. The temperature and chloride concentration will result in corrosion (SCC and pitting)attack.

Barry In addition to Duplex S.S 2205 or its equivalent, think of E-Brite 26-1 (Airco Vacuum product) for such service with high cholrides and sea water chemistry changes and turbidity conditions Hope this helps C.V.Srinivasan Nishi Engineers Pvt Ltd India Oct 21, 2008 E-mail: nishi@vsnl.com >Use a duplex stainless steel 2205 for this application.
