"304SS and bleach"

Question:

"I have an industrial customer who is using 10% bleach on 304 SS heat exchanger tubes to clean and remove microbiological fouling. What is the effect of the bleach on the 304 SS ? The bleach is dosed once/day in a cooling tower. The contact time for the high levels of free chlorine is probably 30-60 min each day and the temperature of the water is approximately 40-50 C. Can you comment on these parameters?"

Answer:

In our opinion, the potential for long term pitting of the 304SS tubes exists. You might find it helpful to obtain the paper 'Effect of chlorine on common materials in fresh water'. It can be obtained free from the Nickel Development Institute - Send your mailing address to nidi_toronto@nidi.org.
