"Butt weld vs. Socket weld fittings in 93% h3SO4"
Question:
"Does anyone have any previous experience using 316L stainless steel, socket welded fittings with 93% h3SO4? The piping system will outdoors, and uninsulated. Maximum ambient temperature will be 100°F. We are primarily concerned with crevice corrosion in the socket fittings. We would like to avoid using butt welded fittings if at all possible"
Answer:
Type 316L stainless steel socket weld fittings should perform well in 93% sulfuric acid, at a maximum temperature of 100F. However, chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in crevices may be a potential failure mode, if chlorides are present in the acid as contaminants.
