"SS321 versus SS 304"

Question:

"For a borax solution vessel (alkaline, temp. of about 80 deg. C), our steel supplier sent us SS 321 instead of SS 304. SS304 works fine. SS 321 was found to be corroded after a few days. Does anyone know why this would happen?"

Answer:

Based on your description of the service environment, I can think of no reason that 321SS would have corroded so much more rapidly than 304SS. In most environments, their corrosion rates should be similar.
