A 50,000 gallon phthalic anhydride tank, fabricated of regular carbon grade 304ss, failed at the welds of the shell to the baseplate. The main contributing factor appeared to corrosion of the welds due to the formation of dilute aqueous phthalic acid, which I understand can be moderately corrosive (>50 mpy) to 304ss at elevated temperatures (>200F). In addition, phthalic acid can cause intergranular corrosion of 304ss, which would exacerbate corrosion rates. Would low carbon grade 304ss have been a better choice for the tank material than regular carbon grade 304ss (0.08%)? Would regular carbon grade 316ss have been a better choice? Which of these would be the best or would another grade even be better?

Corrosion rate will increase significantly at high temperature and low pH that I expect you will have inside the tank. Why don't you use carbon steel material and coated teh internal with EPDM, BUNA N, OR TEFLON.But for elastomer coating, pls check your acid concentration. regards.
