17-4
Hi! I have butterfly valve's shaft made of 316. This is a flow control valve. It handles brine with Cl approx. 1000 ppm, at 350 F. If I change the material to 17-4 to increase the strength. How about the corrosion resistance of 17-4 PH to 1000ppm Cl ? Is it better than 316? Thanks !

Dear Sir: 17-4 should be comparable in uniform corrosion resistance to 316SS, depending on the specific aging heat treatment, and should be more resistant to chloride SCC than 316SS. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

If you wanted to avoid a heat treatment of the material, yet still increase strength you might consider duplex 2205. It is roughly twice the strength of 316L stainless steel, has ASME coverage to 600F, and is more resistant to chlorides than 316L and 17-4PH.

The above helped me so much!
