We buy zinc die castings from an outside vendor. They are about the size of a thumb, and they have a screw put in them. They get zinc plated for cosmetic purposes. They are cracking and failing as the screw is tightened. Could they have hydrogen embrittlement? Should they be baked immediately after plating to prevent hydrogen embrittlement? Any suggestions? Bob: Please clarify whether the castings or the screws or cracking. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

The zinc castings are breaking. The screw tightens down on a piece of metal conduit, which creates stress on the zinc casting. That is when the casting cracks/fails. We have had hydrogen embrittlement problems in the past with steel stampings, but I do not know if this can be the problem with these zinc die castings. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Bob: We are not aware of the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement of zinc castings resulting from zinc plating. A quick literature search also does not refer to such. We can help you with a laboratory analysis of a representative failed casting, if you like. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

Dear David, Thanks for the information. I think I will have the vendor send them to a lab for an analysis. Bob Sheehan
