I am an Mech. Eng. Undergrad and am working at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory here at Tallahassee FL. Right now, I'm in the analytical phase of an experiment, and hit a bottleneck because I don't know the Coeff. of Thermal Expansion (in this case, contraction) of SS-304 @ 77K. If anybody knows, or can at least point me in the proper direction, that would be fantastic!

Dear Sir: Please refer to INCO Publication, "Mechanical and Physical Properties of the Austenitic Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steels at Subzero Temperatures". Table 14 lists the thermal expansion coefficient of 304SS as 7.4 X 10exp-6 from -300F to 70F. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

If you are using 304 SS in the presence of magnetic fields, you should be aware that it can acquire (or display) ferromagnetic behavior.
