I am working on a project in which a process change is being proposed which will lower the pH in a quench tank used to cool aluminum to 5.5 using CO2 injection. The tank is epoxy coated, but the circulation/cooling piping is black iron (carbon steel). I know the corrosion rate will be accelerated due to the acidic environment but I have not been able to find any data to quantify the accelerated rate. The question is will the piping need to be changed out to say CPVC or will the corrosion rate increase only slightly, which result in a reduced service life but not justify the cost of replacement.

Hard to say, except that you should expect some increase in corrosion rates. Part of the answer to your question depends on velocities, turbulent flow, etc. You might refer to the original DeWaard-Milliams nomograph for estimated corrosion rates, based on CO2 partial pressures.
