Hi, I'd like some assistance regarding the selection of a suitable material for a deep well (water) bore screen. Normally we would use 304L but I am concerned about the combined effect of increased temperature and chlorides (ie SCC) in this specific instance. Relevant details are: Design Life: 50 years Bore Depth: 800m Expected screen length: 30m Diameter: 100 mm ie 140 mm OD Aperture: 0.5mm Water Temperature: 68 deg C Salinity: 5420 mg/litre Chloride: 2,330mg/l Approximate velocity through Screen: 0.036 m/sec (based on estimated 12% open area) Based on my limited knowledge of SCC, I do not beleive that 304L or 316L are acceptable grades. Should I be considering a duplex (such as 2205) or even a super austenitic? My thanks in advance. Adrian

Adrian: Based on your stated environmental conditions, I would play it safe and use something other than 304/316SS for the well screen. You should consider any alloy that is more resistant to chloride SCC and is readily available as a screen material. Your suggestions of either duplex SS or a superaustenitic are both viable as long as you can find the material. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
