I WORK ON THE DDG PROGRAM AT INGALLS SHIPYARD FOR THE US NAVY CIVIL SERVICE QA.RECENTLY A CHANGE WAS MADE IN THE FIRE MAIN AND SEA WATER PIPING SYSTEMS. THEY SWITCHED FROM 90-10 COPPER NICKEL TO 70-30 COPPER NICKEL[PIPE AND FITTINGS].THEY CHANGED BOTH IN THE FIRE MAIN SYSTEM.HOWEVER IN THE SEA WATER SYSTEM THEY CHANGED THE PIPE TO 70-30 COPPER NICKEL BUT LEFT THE ELBOWS AND FITIINGS 90-10 COPPER NICKEL IT SEEMS TO ME SOME BODY GOOFED BY NOT MAKING ALL THE PIPE AND FITTINGS IN BOTH SYSTEMS 70-30 COPPER NICKEL. WHAT DO YOU FOLKS OUT THERE HAVE TO SAY? DON KUMPUNEN QA SPECIALIST SHIP BUILDING US NAVY

Don: We cannot think of a rationale for changing piping to 70-30 Cu-Ni and leaving fittings 90-10 Cu-Ni except for cost reasons. Perhaps someone is counting on the extra wall thickness of elbows, etc. for additional corrosion allowance? Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

THIS ALSO POSES ANOTHER PROBLEM.THE PIPE FITTERS IN THIS SHIP YARD MAKE MISTAKES ON VALVE INSTALLATION, USING THE WRONG PIPE MATERIAL,ETC.PICKING AND CHOOSING WHERE TO USE 70-30 COPPER NICKEL WILL CREATE MORE CONFUSION AND DEFICIENCIES. WILL A 90-10 ELBOW ON THE DISCHARGE SIDE IN A FIRE MAIN SYSTEM BE THICK ENOUGH TO LAST AS LONG AS THE 70-30 CU-NI PIPING? DON KUMPUNEN
