We are planning to do a comparison corrosion test that realtes to seawater and high stresses. We would like to compare different materials and different surface treatments in order to make a proper evaluation that gives us information of which method is to be used in future applications, a change of material or protecting the currently used material? What would be the best test to effectuate that provides sufficiently reliable information? Thank you in advance!

Dear Sir: There are several corrosion tests that could be run to compare materials in seawater, from simple coupon exposure tests in actual or simulated seawater to tests designed to measure the influence of velocity, crevices, temperature, etc. You don't state your intended application or what results you are interested in to provide a more detailed answer. I have limited experience with materials selection for seawater service... However, I suspect a comparison of stainless materials like you propose has already been performed..... There are books, engineering forums etc...dedicated to materials selection in seawater service. Hasn't this already been done ??? MJC
