I am looking at a fresh water hydroelectric application where a manufacturer could produce a turbine out of 304 or CA6NM is there a benefit of using one over the other and what does the C A N M all stand for in the designation of CA6NM.

Matt: CA6NM is the cast equivalent of type 410 stainless steel. It is significantly different from 304SS. Type 304SS will exhibited greater overall corrosion resistance compared with CA6NM and CA6NM can be heat treated to higher strengths than 304SS. The selection depends on what your strength and corrosion resistance needs are. P.S. We do not know what the CA6NM stands for, except that the "CA" designates a casting. Hope this helps! Hi, CA6NM is an Alloy Casting Institute designation. C= Corrosion resistance application A= indicates the Cr level (13% here, minimum for a SS) 6= 0,06% Carbon max N=nickel M=molybdenum regards, ppl

Mr. Hendrix. CA6NM is not the cast equivalent of 410 Stainless Steel though it belongs to the same series. The exact cast equivalent of 410 ss is CA15, where 15 stands for Carbon content ( 0.15% max). Regards, Kochappan.
