Good day, can anyone suggest me what is the most appropriate alloys/materials for trunk tanks to transport 95% sulfuric acid? There are lots of materials such as carbon steel, 304/316ss, alloy 20 etc. But which 1 is suitable? And why? Besides that, can also teach me what is the form of corrosion mechanism which will occur?

mhwong01: We believe that industry has probably standarized on tanker materials to transport sulfuric acid; however, we're not certain what that standard is. There are several alloys that will handle 95% acid at R.T., including 316SS and alloy 20. A properly coated carbon steel may also be viable. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

If my information is correct, a composition of 96 % sulphuric acid is critical with respect to its physical properties. Decreasing as well as increasing of its composition will lead to e.g. increased corrosive properties. Anton Alderliesten

Dear mhwong01, To begin with , though optional it is always better to mention full name in letters. However for your 95% H2SO4 Tanker material (1) If Temperature of Acid is less than 50degC and (2) if internal turbulance during transport or loading is less tha 2ft/second (3) if concentration is 92% to 98% you can straight way use Good Quality Carbon Steel material based on your mechanical design calculation for tank, bullet designs regards Debasis Mitra

Adding further to Debasis's suggestions, under nomral aeration and for static vessel, simple carbon steel will be OK.
