I would like to know if nitrgen can itself ( in chemical process which is only nitrogen ) under suitable condition ( pressure and temperature ) cause nitriding of steel.

Masoud: Any chemical process that is similar to actual nitriding conditions, i.e., disassociated ammonia, can result in nitriding of steel. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
