Dear fellows I am designing a Sec VIII Div. 1 pressure vessel with a minimum design metal temperature of -80 deg C. The material that I have selected is SA-203 Gr. D. Please comment on suitability for this temperature. Is any further treatment of maetrial is required? Regards Owais

As far as I know, Impact testing is essential for materials to be used at MDMT of -48 deg C or less. MDMT in this case is -80 deg C so impact testing is required for the material. Please comment. Owais

Owais Gillani A 203 Grade D specification - Material can stand upto - 101 deg centigrade. -48 deg centigrade impact test given by you will not meet to the code needs for this service duty of -80 deg centigrade. Specific and separate impact test will be needed for your service duty temperature to meet ASME Sec VIII Div 1 qualification of WPS / PQR. Trust this helps you C.V.Srinivasan Nishi Engineers Pvt Ltd India Nov 18, 2005 E-mail: nishi@vsnl.com >>Owais Gillani: >> >>Have you checked the ASME Section VIII, div. 1 impact exempt >>curves for this material? >> >> >> >>David Hendrix >>The Hendrix Group Inc. > > >As far as I know, Impact testing is essential for materials >to be used at MDMT of -48 deg C or less. > >MDMT in this case is -80 deg C so impact testing is required >for the material. > >Please comment. > >Owais
