I am looking for a suitable material for CLO2 (14 g/L, P=200psi) for use in a pulp mill bleach plant. The existing Kynar-lined pipe is at the end of it's life. As it has lasted well, we may replace in kind but are searching alternative options (such as FRP (suitable resin?), Titanium, type of 'super'stainless). Any recommendations from theory, or from experience? thanks,

Chlorine dioxide is nasty stuff..... The only materials that I know to be acceptable are CPVC (low pressure service only) and Kynar Lined piping. Call your chlorine supplier about a handling manual.....as a good customer, they should be giving you one anyway. See this weblink: http://www.epa.gov/safewater/mdbp/pdf/alter/chapt_4.pdf Prince Rubber & Plastics has a plastic pipe supposedly developed specifically for the chlor-alkali, chlorate and pulp bleaching chemical industries. They are but one of many plastic pipe suppliers.. http://princerp.com/html/about_p72.html Let us know what you finally decide.... -MJC

Thanks, I'm considering Kynar-lined, 254 SMo, and Titanium. So far the pricing of Titanium pipe is comparable to Kynar, however, it poses issues of weldability and reparability (in the rare case there is a failure).

I had thought that there might be a suitable duplex SS for this service, but it turns out there isn't - at least one that is practical. Titanium was a consideration, but field welding would be extremely difficult. It looks like we will stick with Kynar lined. We were searching for an alternative so that we could eliminate the leaking risk of the flanges inherent in the Kynar system. Thanks for your thoughts.

all, In 1999, AB Sandvik steel clained that titanium was the premiere material for chlorine service in pulp& paper mills. http://www2.sandvik.com/sandvik/0140/internet/se01251.nsf/1ab734b4713311544125653d002eb28b/8efb76de95b07e7e41256808004eeda9!OpenDocument&Click= http://www.optek.com/Application_Note/Pulp_and_Paper/English/1/Inline_Chlorine_Dioxide_Monitoring_-_Pulp_Bleaching.asp http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=1225 Please do us the common courtesy of completeing this thread by informing us of your final choice...... -MJC
