HI, I am a mechanical engineer. I have doubts on some of the following issues. Hope I can get some advise on the composition of SST-304 material. 1)Please advise if C, Cr, Ni have magnetism properties. 2)If either of the 3 components shows a 15-20% increase/decrease compared to the standard spec, is there any impact on the magnetism and corrosion? Eg: SST 304 ( Standard: C: max 0.07, Cr17-19.5, Ni: 8-10) verses (C: 0.035, Cr: 8.01, Ni: 17.39) (Please advise) Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers, Cindy

Austenitic grades such as 304 are generally non magnetic. Reduction of Cr or Ni most definitely have an affect on the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Aug-01-08 AT 04:22 PM (CDT)]Stainless Steel AISI304 is non-magnetic austenitic steel. Austenite does not provide magnetic properties to this type of SS. Ni and Cr only impart corrosion resistance protperties to it and have no effect on magnetic properties. Carbon %age does not effect the magnetic property as well, reducing carbon %age in SS is desired to aviod formation of chromium carbide at grain boundaries in order to overcome sensitization problem inthis type of steel.
