Can you comment on the performance of a cast iron part in a caustic environment? Specifically, we have a steam turbine that has cast iron internals. The steam temperature is approximately 550F, and we have measured the residue to have a pH of 11 due to caustic. How would you expect the cast iron parts to hold up?

Sir: If the elevated pH is due to sodium or potassium hydroxide, then SCC of the cast iron may occur. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
