I have an application where SS316L is used for deaerated sea water service. The operating temperature range is 21°C to 31°C. The sea water is chlorinated up to a residual chlorine content of 1ppm. The dissolved oxygen content is 20ppb. Is this situation susceptible to crevice corrosion. Please explain.

Sana: Crevice corrosion is difficult to predict as it is a complicated function of crevice geometry, chloride content, pH and temperature and we have no knowledge of your potential crevices. Your conditions do not appear to be at high risk of crevice corrosion, though, based on a relatively low temperature, the use of 316LSS and low DO. Hope this helps! I agree that this sounds like a safe bet with these low requirements, but you have to test to know for sure with YOUR exact parts.
