We have a client who is considering the use of flat-lock seam brass facade panels on a project in the upper midwest. Questions are: How will extremely cold temperatures and thermal cycling effect long-term durability and performance of brass? (embrittlement concerns in cold temperatures? cracking/overstressing at fasteners if not properly designed/installed??) How will cooling tower discharge effect brass (eg: how will chemicals in discharge plume effect brass panel surfaces??). Any materials science-related input regarding the use of this material as an exterior facade element in this climate would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dan: You don't specify what type of brass you are specifying. 1. Cold climates should not affect brass panels. 2. Thermal cycling can be accounted for by considering the delta temperature range, the thermal expansion coefficient of brass and the resulting stress on the panel fastening system, and buckling/warping due to edge constraint. 3. In an outdoor environment downstream from a cooling tower, brasses will probably tarnish and stain if exposed to aqueous chlorides and sulfur compounds. They can stress crack if exposed to ammonia compounds. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
