My group is proposing to construct a pressure vessel for use in batch sterilization of waste aqueous effluent. The effluent will have small amount of organic material (mostly <1000ppm) and a salinity of %7E0 to 2 % (w/v); most salt derived from marine salt water (max. %7E12,000ppm Cl ion and 7,000ppm Na ion) in effluent). The pressure vessel will be treating loads of %7E600L of waste water at 70-130 deg C, at pressures of ambient up to 25 psi above atmosphere, for 20-30 minutes duration, using injected steam. We would like to get 3-5 years of lifespan from this structure (%7E500-800 loads per year). Questions: Is 316L the best steel material to use for this pressure vessel? Are there better SS’s available (possibly 430SS?) or should other metals, or non-metals be considered? Regardless of what SS is used (at this time, we’re thinking of 316L or 430), is there a non-metallic interior coating that could be added to the SS pressure vessel that would help in delaying the onset of corrosion? Would sacrificial anodes or cathodes be useful to slow the corrosiveness of the salt water effluent? Should we consider any other corrosion protection strategies? Thanks.

fishcl3: We do not normally recommend materials of construction for a process in a discussion forum format, as the potential liability of being wrong, based on limited information, does not warrent the risk. Your question is best handled as a consulting engagement, where full disclosure can occur. However, we can say that we do not recommend your stated environmental conditions with 316SS. The risk of pitting and chloride SCC is too great. You should consider an alloy with a high nickel content and PREN value or a non-metallic lining that would be resistant to the process and operating temperature.
