Our company just received a bunch of components (trays) that are 304L stainless steel. Upon receiving inspection, it was discovered that the weld was infact very magnetic. When we investigated further it was determined that ER410 (martensitic SS) filler material was used to join the two 304L sections. The manufacturer has not submitted a WPS and the supporting PQR to confirm the hardness, PWHT (if applicable). I have never seen anyone weld 304L using ER410. I would assume they would use E309 or 310 or atleast an austenitic 300series type. This will be subject to high partial pressures of H2S as well. Should we reject the ER410 weld?

Metallurgist Technically you should reject as what you specified had not been done by the tray supplier. Your weld should meet to SS 309 / SS 310 L for welding S.S 304 L plates/ Also tray welds if it had been done using martensitic SS 410 electrode (as observed by you) (i.e, not relieved of stresses without PWHT ) may give problems with high partial pressure of H2S after some years. This filler metal is not correct for joining 304L. The correct filler metal should have been 308L. This is a nonconformance and should be rejected regardless of the welding procedure that was used by the vendor. The use of ER410 will result in the formation of harmful microstructures.
