Can anyone throw light on what is the reason behind generation of cracks in a case hardened steels. These steels are used as a rack tooth of a jack up rig .

Dear my friend, Surface hardening processes usually develop brittle phases (Martensite ,...) in the microstructure of the metal and reduce their resistance to crack growth though making them wear resistant. As a rule of thumb, the harder a metal more brittle it is.
