Air cooled steam condensate tube, low carbon steel, leaked 600mm from outlet lead. Splitting the tube shows severe pitting near the perforation and considerable reduction of thickness. Outlet temp is 100 deg.C and pressure 12 Barg. What could be the probable cause of failure - general corrosion or steam impingement or ?????? Please help.

Akansha: Your carbon steel steam condensate tube failure is probably due to dissolved oxygen (DO) and/or dissolved CO2 in the condensate. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

Akansha: It has been my experience that condensate system pitting is augmented by stagnant conditions or by systems that cycle up and down thermally.....The dissolved oxygen gets a chance to act Was the unit subject to this kind of operating conditions ??? MJC
