Krish: We do not profess to be experts in this area, however, mercury has a potential SCC effect on aluminum, which is an issue with aluminum cold boxes on the back end of an olefins unit. We can't provide an acceptable level of mercury with respect to corrosion in a refinery, except to say that we haven't heard of it being an issue. David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

Krish Source : Oil & Gas Development - Onshore (Pollution Prevention & Abatement Handbook - World Bank Group - 1998 Total toxic metals permitted in Crude Oil Processing : 5 mg/ litre (Toxic metals include the following namely - Arsenic, Beryllium, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Lead, Nickel, Mercury, Selenium, Silver,Thallium, Vanadium and Zinc,). Total Waste water Management - Contaminants permitted in Crude Oil Processes Cadmium: 0.6 mg/litre Chromium: 2.3 mg/litre Copper : 0.4 mg/ltre Nickel : 0.4 mg/litre Lead: 0.2 mg/litre Mercury: 0.1 mg/litre You should recognize the harmful effects of Mercury from SCC on various metals (S.S, Cu, Al to name a few) in service. Also look from pollution control aspects using Mercury in crude oil proecessing. Mercury is harmful for human handling.
