Hope design engineers/civil engineers will be viewing this. My query is, when an old vessel is being replaced by a new identical one, using the same foundation and foundation bolts- at the concrete air interface and anchor chair bolt hole location necking of foundation bolts are likely to occur due to crevice corrosion. 1.What is the allowable percentage in area reduction per bolt ? 2. What percentage of the number of bolts are allowed which have undergone this phenomenon? 3. Is any requirement is there to excavate all the bolts and check the same.

Arnab: Part of the answer may lie in if a corrosion allowance was included with the bolt design. If not, any significant necking should be evaluated using finite element analysis or replaced. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.

Arnab, Another alternative may be to tensile test the bolts individually and selectively replace the defective ones. Since you are installing a new vessel, the vessel vendor must have calculated new bolt loads and you can test to these new values. -MJC
