during tank bottom plate visual inspection pittings can be seen. In many case pittings are dull and in many cases pittings are shiny. Forum to share opinion / experience about practical methodology to assess how to conclude pittings are due to MIC ( aerobic / unaerobic )? regards

Bottom plates of oil storage tanks, product side as well as soil side are subjected to MIC corrosion. Sulfate reducing bacterias (SRB) are examples of anaerobic corrosion. Creation of oxygen concentration cells are examples of aerobic corrosion. Normally both situations are associated and without laboratory testing it will be hard to say if MIC corrosion is predominantly aerobic or anaerobic. For your information please go to the site bellow for a curious presentation about MIC http://www.jotun.com/www/us/20020228.nsf/viewunid/3E67C8000B58635086256C92007800D9/$file/Customer+Presentation+JK+9-21-02+Revision+7B-autorun.ppt#303,18,CONTROLLING MIC Regards Luis marques

To arrive at conclusion whether pitting related to MIC or not the tank bottom sludge/scale can be analysed to find out the microbes count and grading of corrosion attack i.e SRB etc. In general SRB pits are very shiny and having clear boundary with spherical shape normally filled with corrosion products. If you remove the corrosion product you can feel the rotten egg smell. In india CECRI-Karaikudi is having facility to analyse the MIC related microbes. regards,
