We are facing repetitive problem of corrosion of monel tubes in HF acid regenerator feed preheater. It is a two pass exchanger, with 205 U tubes. HF acid+Polymer feed is on tube side and heating media is hot oil at 220%C2°C on shell side. Tubes are 3/4" 2.1 mm thk. The corrosion is seen on upper half of the tube in the first pass near to the tube sheet (HF acid inlet). It is more pronounced near baffles, with pits forming on these locations. Phenomena is more extensive in first two rows of the tubes. We have already replaced the monel tube bundle once two years back. However it is leaking again. Anybody having experiance on this. What could be the reasons and remedies to stop corrosion of monel tubes. Thanking you in anticipation please. Shashank Reliance India

Presence of even 1% water and small level of O2 can increase corrosion rate. Pl. check. regards>We are facing repetitive problem of corrosion of monel tubes >in HF acid regenerator feed preheater. As you observed pitting corrosion at the inlet row of tubes it may be due to accumulation of scales over the period of time and causing pitting corrosion. Please check the inlet top impingement plate dimension and if possible you can extend the impingment plate up to first baffle. This will avoid accumulation of scaling over the top rows of tubes and particle impingement(flow induced)attack. regards,
