Our pipefitters currently cover open flanges with Duct tape temporarily when replacing valves. It was brought to my attention this would cause chloride stress corrosion due to the chlorides in the tape and glue. Does anyone have information on this? Thanks Bobby

Bobby: We have personal experience with chloride SCC of 304SS piping that had been wrapped with black electrical tape. If the temperature is hot enough (>140F) and the duct tape contains chlorides, chloride SCC is a long term risk, depending on the material stresses. Also the tape wrap can trap enviromnental chlorides, promoting damage. It is our experience that thinner wall piping components are more susceptible to failure as compared with stiffer components, i.e., flanges, etc. based on higher stresses. Hope this helps! Bobby, This chloride concern first came up during the operating license review for the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant ( in New Hampshire) The stainless steel RHR system had "red duct tape" used during construction which, (it was claimed) had caused exterior corrosion on the piping. This was after repeated wetting and drying cycles. You can read about it in page 77 of this report..... www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/staff/sr0750/nrci47.pdf ( Thank God for GOOGLE !!!!!!) A little realism about the actual "risks of duct tape" is in order A "chloride free" duct tape is available, as I understand MJC
