Unfortunately calcium chloride has been spilt over our 304 & 316 stainless steel causing severe corrosion. What is the best way to clean the calcium choride off and the rust and is there anything we can do to the stainless steel to stop the rust coming back. Also, can we treat the steel with anything to prevent corrosion occuring again should it get splashed with calcium choride a second time?

Bob: You might spraying with an alkaline cleaner to neutralize the acidic calcium chloride. To remove rust stains, try a dilute acetic acid solution. As for protection against inadvertant spills as you have described, an appropriate paint topcoat should work. Hope this helps! David Hendrix The Hendrix Group Inc.
